Calvin was born in Hamlin, Texas, on April 26, 1940, to Truman Garrett and Gertie Woods Garrett, one of three children. He married the love of his life Tina Riggs on December 23, 1960, and they were looking forward to celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary in six months. To this union were born daughter Sherie, son Wesley, son Jeffrey, and daughter Shannon.
He was known as a man of impeccable character, always happy, fun to be around, and was consistently in a good mood. He was a role model for his integrity and humility; he touched many lives in countless ways, yet wanted no recognition. He was confident and independent in his thoughts and actions, and had no need for acceptance from anyone else. Calvin was proud of his military career, and faithfully served his country with honor in the United States Army for twelve years. He was entrusted with a high level security position and carried out those duties flawlessly.
He served his Lord faithfully as a member of First Baptist Church of Buffalo Gap.
Calvin knew how to enjoy life to its fullest. He relished simple things such as sitting in the beautiful back yard with his wife, hunting, fishing, spending time with family. He worked hard at his leisure time, planning pronghorn hunting trips to Wyoming, and bringing home his prizes. He was passionate about his various collections, and no trip was complete without side trips and stops at antique shops along the way, and many times far out of the way! He has an impressive collection of antique toys, guns, toy guns and knives. He shared his vast selection of pocket knives with his grandchildren, and the family considered as a rite of passage his gifting each grandchild with his or her own pocket knife. What a priceless treasure to them!
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his wife Tina; daughter Sherie Newman (Kevin); son Wesley Garrett (Angie); son Jeffrey Wade Garrett (Lynn); daughter Shannon Garrett; 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; sister Doris Ann Skiles and brother Melvin Garrett, along with many other cousins, nieces and nephews
A visitation for Calvin will be held Friday, May 10, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, Garden of Memories Cemetery & Crematory, 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene, Texas 79606.
