Anita was a former Abilene resident, where she grew up and was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. Anita was deeply devoted to her faith and community through her work in Odessa at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church where services were also held.
A visitation for Anita will be held Friday, September 27, 2024 at 6:00 PM at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene, Texas 79606. A rosary will follow at 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. A graveside service will occur Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Elmwood Memorial Park, Abilene, Texas.
Preceding her in death were brothers Reyes and Agustine Diaz; sisters Rosa Diaz and Isabel (Frank) Martinez; brother-in-law Charles (Cecilia) Hambrick; sister-in-law Rosie (Edward) Diaz; nephews and nieces Michael Ray Diaz, Rusty Morel, Anita Julia Diaz and Honey Diaz.
Those left to treasure her memory are her brother and sisters Edward Diaz, Guadalupe Diaz and Cecilia Hambric of Abilene, and Theodora Diaz and Ramona (Ronald) Morel of Fort Worth; and many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
She was the youngest of ten children. Her smile and playfulness endeared many to her as a youngster. She was a cheerleader at Houston Elementary School, the school for Mexican American students in Abilene. She went on to Lincoln Junior High and graduated from Abilene High. She earned a BA in psychology at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio in 1986. She began her work in Odessa as a teacher at St. Mary’s Catholic Elementary, and then as Director of Religious Education at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. She continued in her role for 30 years until her retirement. Many were inspired by her enduring love for God and her wish to have a closer relationship with Him.
The family wishes to thank all those who volunteered their time to take care of our beloved aunt in her time of need. We wish God’s blessings on you for what you gave so selflessly. Thank you.
