After 102 years of an incredibly blessed life, Rachel Agnes Clarke Stone, passed away, on Sunday, July 23rd, 2017, at a local nursing home. A family visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 25th, from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel at 542 Hickory St. A private burial will be held on Wednesday, July 26th, and a Memorial Service will follow at 1:00 pm at the University Church of Christ Chapel in Abilene.
Agnes was born on August 9, 1914, in Abilene, Texas to Luther and Carrie Clarke. Agnes was a proud Eagle and graduate of Abilene High School, and she received a degree in Elementary Education from Abilene Christian University. While attending ACU, Agnes met Robert G. (Bob) Stone, and they were married on June 7th, 1940. Bob and Agnes were blessed to share 66 years of marriage together.
Agnes was a devoted and caring teacher for 25 years in the Abilene Independent School District. She touched the lives of countless children while teaching third grade at College Heights Elementary and then as a Title 1 Reading Teacher at Travis Elementary. After retiring at the age of 70, Agnes continued to serve the community with cheerfulness and kindness as a substitute teacher.
Agnes was a longtime member and former Sunday School teacher at the University Church of Christ. Agnes was a former President and member of the Abilene Mother Study Club. In addition, she was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Women for ACU, Abilene Woman’s Club, and the Abilene Garden Club.
Agnes is preceded in death by her husband, Bob Stone; sisters, Juanita Clarke and Dorotha McDonald, and her brother, Jack Martin Clarke.
Survivors include her daughter, Melinda Gordon and her husband, Kerry, of Greenwood Village, Colorado; a grandson, Jeff Gordon, of Denver, Colorado; nieces, Marilyn Bramley of Lake Kiowa, Texas and Barbara Clarke Hocker of Carbondale, Colorado; nephews, Dr. Dale McDonald and Tommy Clarke, both of San Angelo, Texas, and Randy Clarke of Abilene.
As a long distant daughter, Melinda is most grateful and appreciative to all the doctors, nurses, caregivers, and a multitude of friends who have helped Agnes in countless ways through the last few years. We are especially thankful for Dr. Sandra Hazelip who continually demonstrated her medical expertise with care and concern. We also want to thank our very special friend, Valerie Nunez.
