Walter came into this world on April 25, 1965. He was born on a warm day, in Halbstadt, Paraguay. He was the pride of his parents. Walt spent his first years there in Paraguay before the family moved to Germany for four years. It was during this time in Germany that his beloved little sister was born. Walt had a very important task at the early age of three. He was to cast the deciding vote for his sisters name. His choices were (a) Monica, or (b)Hildegard. Apparently Hildegard rolled right off his tongue, and well, she’s been mad at him ever since. After those 4 years in Germany the family returned to Paraguay, and then in 1976 they moved to Abbotsford BC.
Walter's favourite school memories occurred during his time at Clearbrook Junior High, where he spent too much time with a group of rowdy friends, but still managed to stay out of too much trouble. That group of friends always spoke highly of him and protected him through those years. In his later teen years he helped welcome a new member to his family, John Dennis. Walter now had an instant babysitting job. Walter also enjoyed his teen years being a part of the Ebenezer Church youth group. Besides meeting on Sunday mornings, regular activities included Wednesday Youth Night, chicken catching to raise money for trips to Camp Squeah or other youth retreats, hanging out in the SevenOaks Mall parking lot, and many coffees and large plates of fries and gravy at Calico Inn, Brownies, or CrossRoads Restaurants. He would say that Dave Kropp was the best youth leader ever, and a lifelong friend and mentor.
In September of 2007, Walter married Angie Fast. They soon set in motion plans to adopt their beloved son Levi. Angie and Levi were the best things that ever happened to him and his greatest loss is not seeing Levi grow and become the amazing young man that he already is. He was so proud of Levi.
In 2012, upon his confession of faith, Walt was baptized at Grace Church with family and friends by his side. Walt’s career was spent behind the wheel of a semi truck. He loved the open road, driving from coast to coast across North America, along with his canine companions Bella and Rocky.
Walter is survived by his beloved son Levi, his parents John and Anna, his sister Hilary (Nick) and brother John (Ellie). Along with wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles from all over the world. Walt’s leaves a legacy of a great sense of humour and a gentle and kind heart. He was calm and faced every challenge with Jesus in mind. His spiritual life was deeply rooted in his faith and remained unshaken during the last year of his life. “God’s got this.” He would say. He was so loved and will also be so missed.
