Rod Smith passed away on March 25, 2024, at the age of 68, while in the ICU at Burnaby General Hospital. His passing was unexpectedly quick, due to unforeseen circumstances. In his own way his last words said, “I love you and I will see you at home soon.”
Rod was born in Regina, SK, where he spent most of his childhood, until moving to BC in 1971. He attended BCIT for a career in Structural Steel Design, which led to participating in the design of the first transit system in Vancouver, along with numerous other projects.
In 1974, Rod met the love of his life, Heidi, while attending a church youth group. They were married in September 1978, and decided to set down roots in Yarrow in 1980. At first the family grew with 2 dogs, Buster and Muffin, and then the most precious gift, a daughter, Lisa, in July of 1983.
Rod’s love of cars, furry animals, but mostly his big heart for others, will be survived by his wife Heidi, his daughter Lisa, his grandson Isaiah, his brother Doug, his sister Nora, numerous bothers and sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service for Rod will be held Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford, BC V2T2X5, followed by a reception from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
