Kenneth (Ken) Cherry Pocklington, a community radio personality, world traveler, and dear father, peacefully passed away on April 16th, 2023, at the age of 85. Surrounded by the comfort of his own home in Abbotsford, British Columbia, he slipped away in his sleep, leaving behind a legacy of strength and quiet devotion. Born in England on May 23rd, 1937, Ken came from a family of seven siblings, and he is survived by his brothers in England, Roger and John, and his children, Cheryl and Nicholas.
From an early age, Ken’s adventurous spirit led him to explore the world. In his youth, he embarked on a career in the Merchant Navy, traversing the seas and venturing to far-off lands, embracing the beauty of the world around him. His time in the Merchant Navy granted him a wealth of memories and experiences, enriching his understanding of people and places, leaving an indelible mark on his soul. It is through this experience that he met Marian, the mother of his children.
As a radio personality, his warm voice and captivating presence graced the airwaves, bringing joy and entertainment to countless listeners throughout his broadcasting journey. His ability to connect with people through the power of his voice endeared him to many, making him a memorable figure in the hearts of his listeners.
In his later years, Ken found solace and contentment in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed a good game of snooker at his local Legion, played golf for many years and solved the daily crossword puzzle with his well-loved dictionary at hand. An avid card player, he reveled in the strategic complexities and camaraderie he found in the game of Bridge. Whether engaged in friendly competition at social gatherings or via digital platforms with players from around the world, Ken relished the strategic challenges the game presented, the connections it fostered and the wins he accumulated.
As a single leg amputee, Ken demonstrated an unyielding spirit of independence. He embraced life on his terms, carving his own path. His self-sufficiency inspired all who encountered him.
Beneath his stoic and aloof exterior, he harbored a quietly loving and loyal heart. Often misunderstood, his apparent indifference was mistaken for apathy. However, those who took the time to truly know him discovered a soul capable of profound affection. He took pride in witnessing the growth and achievements of his children and grandchildren. With his solitary yet tender nature, his unassuming presence endeared him to all who crossed his path. Ken defied easy characterization, an enigmatic individual who surprised others with displays of sentiment. His fiercely independent spirit and unwavering love for family will continue to inspire those who follow his path.
