Ethel was born on February 21, 1935 in the teacherage by the Willow Lake School close to Dalmeny, Saskatchewan to John K. and Anna Brandt. She had 7 brothers and 3 sisters. One sister, just older than Ethel, died at 10 months. When she was 3 the family moved to the village of Reinland, Manitoba.
She had a happy childhood. When she was in Grade 3, they moved to Burwalde, Manitoba. At 10 years old Ethel accepted Jesus as her Saviour. She was baptized at 13 and became a member of the East Chilliwack Mennonite Brethren Church.
In 1947 when Ethel was in Grade 7, they moved to Chilliwack, B.C. where she finished High School. She then attended the East Chilliwack Bible School for 2 years, followed by teacher training at the Vancouver Normal School. She taught in Oliver, Mt. Lehman, Prince Rupert and Masset. She later attended MBBC for 2 years. Throughout the years she enjoyed teaching Sunday School, Pioneer Girls Club, Good News Club and singing in trios, quartets and choirs. She also enjoyed accompanying groups on the piano.
On August 20, 1968 she married Peter Suderman. They lived in Winnipeg where a son Kelly, and then a daughter Rachel, were born. They later lived in Prince George, Chilliwack, and most recently, Abbotsford, B.C.
Ethel is lovingly remembered by her husband Peter Suderman, her son Kelly Suderman, his wife Lisa and their children Julianna Suderman and Leighton Suderman of Tavistock, Ontario and her daughter Rachel Koop, her husband Mike and their children Nicole & Rylan Brown and their son Peter, Nathan Koop and Rebecca Koop of Okotoks, Alberta. She is also remembered by brothers Herb Brandt, Gilbert Brandt and his wife Mary Funk, sister Evelyn and her husband Carl Braun, and sisters in law Ruby Brandt, Margaret Brandt, and Anne Brandt.
The family requests that instead of flowers, donations are given, in memory of Ethel, to the Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission B.C. (cheques made payable to Mission Hospice Society at 32180 Hillcrest Ave Mission B.C. V2V 1L2). Donations may also be made online through their website (missionhospicesociety.bc.ca). Ethel received such wonderful care during her final weeks and her family is very grateful to the incredible staff and volunteers at the hospice.
A Memorial Service will take place at a later date.
