Doug was born December 28, 1935 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Gladys and Charles Leaney. He passed away peacefully at 87 years old in Abbotsford, BC on September 25, 2023. Doug is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Helga, children from his first marriage to Ruth; Cindy (Gerald), Corey (Charmaine), Patty, step-sons Brad (Seda) and Jeff (Kelsy), and grandchildren Jordan, Hayley, Jaymie, Willow, Aaron and Charlotte. Doug was pre-deceased by his brother Ken and son Kelly.
Doug led a full, rich and varied life. His first job was at the shipping department of Sears where he naturally struck up conversations with the delivery drivers leading him to become a truck driver at only 16 years old. After a brief stint working at a lumber mill on Vancouver Island, Doug moved to Calgary, AB and became a Firefighter for 10 years. Doug married Ruth in Penticton, BC and Cindy, Corey, Kelly and Patty were born soon afterward.
When Doug moved to the lower mainland, he became active in the community through his involvement with Langley Kinsman. Doug sold cars at Langley Preston, drove an oil truck in the winter, and got into Real Estate, where he became Sales Manager. He and Helga married in 1977 and began a devoted, life-long partnership. Soon afterwards in 1978, Doug and Helga joined Doug’s brother Ken and wife Marlene at Leaney Jewelers. Doug continued with his entrepreneurial spirit when in 1989 he and Helga started their successful 33 year business, Fraser Connection Cruises. Captain Doug found his calling and loved being in the wheelhouse, guiding the MV Native on the Fraser River. He was well known and exceptionally well respected in the marine community.
Doug and Helga enjoyed many years of travel and adventure with family and friends that included Thousand Trails trips to Leavenworth, many adventures to Borrego Springs, trips to Europe, Costa Rica, and Hawaii. Doug loved vintage cars, horses, his grandkids, drawing and was devoted to Helga. Doug was a loving step-dad to Brad and Jeff and proudly celebrated their life milestones. Doug had deep friendships forged over many years. People were drawn to him and his understated and unwavering principles, loyalty and trust. Doug’s kindness and humour shone through in all he did.
