Andrew Frederick Thompson, of Abbotsford, British Columbia passed away peacefully on Monday, August 8, 2022 aged 91, after a final day spent with his beloved family.
A native of Philadelphia, Fred attended Henry Lawton Elementary School and Murrell Dobbins Technical High School in his home city before earning degrees from Eastern College and Reformed Episcopal Seminary. In his youth he worked at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where he met many interesting people. He supported the Philadelphia Athletics with identical twin and frequent co-conspirator Sam, and subscribed to the Philadelphia Orchestra, then directed by Eugene Ormandy.
In 1957 he moved to Three Hills, Alberta, where he became Professor of English at Prairie Bible Institute. In 1962 he married Gerry Loland, the couple providing a happy home for their three children. The family moved to British Columbia where Fred taught at Trinity Western University from 1975-1986. He was regarded as an excellent teacher, students often remarking on his willingness to stay after class and offer help and advice.
In retirement Fred enjoyed strolling around Mill Lake, chatting with his many friends along the way. He remained active at Sevenoaks Alliance Church, where he served as a Bible Study leader.
Fred was pre-deceased by his parents, Samuel and Helen (Ketcham) Thompson, his brother Samuel, and his sister Helen. He is survived by his sister Judith Gannon, his children Jon, Beth (Rex), and Lauri Thompson, and his grandchildren Jordan and Madison Inglis. He will be lovingly remembered by his family for his deep Christian faith and his kind, faithful, fun personality.
The family would like to express appreciation to the wonderful staff at the Marwood Long-term Care Home in Langley, who cared for him in the last part of his life. Donations in Fred’s memory can be made to Slavic Gospel Association, one of many charities he faithfully supported. An announcement regarding a memorial service will be forthcoming.
