History

Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home was founded by Bill Crawford and Delbert Bowers in 1972. Both retired from the United States military, they felt a need for a strong military-related funeral home in the community. Bill was command sergeant major of the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, and Delbert was a warrant officer in charge of the Officers Club.

The relationships they built during their time in the military provided a great advantage to continue to serve people through funeral service. They built upon those relationships by being very active in the community and building strong relationships with people of all walks of life. Both Bill and Delbert felt it was an honor to serve families by being the professional support they needed in the time of loss. This commitment is present today in the continued operations of Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home.

Delbert Duane Bowers' life and legacy

Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home founder Delbert Duane Bowers passed away in December 2016 at the age of 87. Born on Nov. 20, 1929, in Barada, Nebraska, to Delbert L. and Daisy Kirkendall Bowers, Delbert was the oldest child of their marriage. He grew up and was educated in Nebraska, graduating from the University of Nebraska in Omaha. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, where he served for 27 years until his retirement in 1974 at the rank of chief warrant officer 4. After retirement, he had a 2nd career as a funeral director.

In 1972, he and his business partner William ”Bill” Crawford began Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen, Texas, and Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove in 1988. Over the years, Delbert touched the lives of people throughout both communities. He always felt it was an honor to serve the people in a time when they needed it most and remained active in the business until the time of his passing.

Besides being a successful business leader, Delbert was also very dedicated to many civic organizations. He was a life member of VFW Post 3892 in Harker Heights, DAV Post 147 in Killeen and American Legion Post 223 in Killeen. He was involved in the Killeen Evening Lions Club, Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce, Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce and Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge of Falls City, Nebraska, for over 65 years. Delbert was a longtime active member of Skyline Baptist Church in Killeen and greatly enjoyed spending time with his family, staying active, playing golf and working at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home.
