About

Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home provides funeral and cremation services in Statesville. For more than a century, we’ve supported our friends and neighbors with compassionate care. We believe in treating all of the families who come to us with dignity and respect, serving all ethnicities and faith backgrounds.

A beautiful Statesville funeral home

We at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home are always looking to make you comfortable. Our recently renovated funeral home is a single-story space that’s wheelchair accessible for elderly and physically challenged guests.

The lovely chapel has warm tones of yellow, wood and white with traditional pew seating. The building has numerous visitation rooms and areas for you to gather with your family as you discuss funeral arrangements. An on-site reception venue hosts catered events before or after a service.

The large parking lot has plenty of space, so there’s no need to worry about finding street parking.

Personalized funerals

Reception room at Bunch-Johnson Funeral HomeOur mission at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home is to help families create personalized funerals and memorials. This approach keeps us open to traditional religious rites as well as contemporary gatherings that deeply reflect a person's life. That means that whether you want a basic cremation with ashes scattered in a personally meaningful place, a funeral in our cozy chapel with cemetery burial nearby, or a modern celebration of life with live music, favorite foods and a send-off that expresses the passions of yourself or your loved one, we are happy to deliver.

Want an afternoon ice cream social? Or maybe an evening wine and cheese gathering is a better fit. Were you thinking about a disco-themed funeral complete with a glitter ball and '70s music? If you can imagine it, we can make it happen.

Cremation services

Not everyone knows that there are many cremation options. If you are interested in cremation, the funeral home team can explain the process and different options. From a direct cremation without a memorial service or a witness cremation to a full funeral service before or after the cremation and more, we help you understand this increasingly common choice—and handle all of the cremation arrangements.

We are here for you

Our funeral home has more than a century of experience. Our team recognizes your family may be going through a lot of emotional difficulty when you come to us, and it’s our role to help you navigate the entire process with a caring and professional touch. We have close working relationships with many local cemeteries to ease the burden of coordinating.

If you have questions or need information, we’ll be right here at every step of the way. You have many options, and we can help explain every one as you choose which memorial service is right for you.

History

Signage at Bunch-Johnson Funeral HomeBunch-Johnson Funeral Home has been a staple of the Statesville community for more than 100 years.

In the early 19th century, the Bunch brothers moved from their native home of Tennessee to make their new homes in Statesville, North Carolina. The brothers eventually started their careers in various occupations before A.W. Bunch founded the Bunch Furniture Company, which made and sold caskets as well as furniture.

Bunch Funeral Home opens

At the time, families commonly kept the earthly remains of a loved on at home, where an undertaker would come to prepare the body. In the early 1900s, A.W. decided to build and open a facility for families to have their loved ones’ funerals. It became known as Bunch Funeral Home.

In fact, there were 2 funeral homes in Statesville in the early 1900s: Bunch Funeral Home and Johnson Funeral Home. They were only a few blocks apart from each other. The original buildings are still standing in Statesville today.

Eventually, when it was purchased from Roy Johnson, R.C. Bunch managed Johnson Funeral Home. The 2 funeral homes were operated as separate businesses until 1975.

Bunch and Johnson merge

That’s when the current owners, Glenn and Myrtle Westmoreland, decided to build a new facility. They merged the businesses and moved into the Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home located at 705 Davie Ave.

Glenn was involved in the day-to-day operation of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home until his sudden death. His wife, Myrtle, also a funeral director, took over the business. She sold it a couple of years later.

Today, the funeral home is a member of the Dignity Memorial® network.
