About

Situated on 62 acres in south St. Louis County, Mount Hope Cemetery and Mausoleum is a historically significant cemetery with more than 23,000 burials. Our cemetery dates back to the early 1900s and continues to serve the burial needs of the St. Louis area to this very day.

The main entrance to the park-like property sits at the intersection of Lemay Ferry and Mount Olive Roads, near Telegraph Road. Here you will find a stately community mausoleum and sweeping green gardens. The cemetery is a respected place of remembrance for 1000s of people of various social, cultural and religious backgrounds.

Beautiful grounds with a variety of burial options

Columbarium at Mount Hope Cemetery & MausoleumBurial options at Mount Hope Cemetery and Mausoleum include in-ground interment, above-ground entombment or inurnment. We are happy to offer an accommodation for every family’s tradition and budget at our perpetual care cemetery.

Burial spaces in the traditional sections of the cemetery have lawn-level granite memorials as well as upright granite markers and monuments. Our named memorial gardens, including Garden of Faith and Hilltop of Memories—each with a beautiful religious feature—have lawn-level markers of imperishable cast bronze. In many areas of the cemetery, double-depth burials are possible.

 Memorialization choices for cremations

Glass niches at Mount Hope Cemetery & MausoleumAt Mount Hope, we also have options for cremated remains, including ground burial and niches in the columbarium (both indoor or outdoor). Our community mausoleum comprises 2 dignified buildings. You can choose indoor crypt entombment in the Chapel of Prayer mausoleum or outdoor crypt entombment. A committal service in the chapel—where a dramatic stained glass window depicts Christ praying in the Garden of Gethsemane—is a wonderful way to honor a loved one.

Floral placements

Mount Hope Cemetery and Mausoleum offers several options for the ongoing placement of flowers on the cemetery grave or mausoleum crypt of a loved one. A yearly floral plan ensures the placement of beautiful fabric bouquets 6 times during the year for cemetery burials and 4 times during the year for mausoleum entombments. The placements coincide with seasons and holidays. We offer special holiday decorations twice each year. Spring bouquets are available for Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day. For Christmas, we have poinsettias, holiday wreaths on easels and fresh balsam grave coverings. A floral bond ensures flowers at the gravesite or crypt of a loved one for 20 years. Bouquets are placed on the same schedule as a floral plan. You may order an individual fabric bouquet for placement at any time.

History

Mount Hope Cemetery & MausoleumFounded in 1910, Mount Hope Cemetery is an early example of the “rural cemetery movement.” C.D. Sims of the American Necropolis Company—a nationally recognized cemetery consultant—designed the property. Edmund Kinsey was the landscape architect. He also designed the grounds for the 1904 World’s Fair in Forest Park.

St. Louis architect, George Hayden, designed the 30-foot-high Beaux Arts-style terracotta entrance which was built in 1927.

Chicago architect, Sidney Lovell, designed the neoclassical-style limestone and marble community mausoleum building which was completed in 1931. Subsequent additions were completed in 1968, 1973 and 1987 by Acme Marble and Granite Company of New Orleans.
