History

Myers-Reed Chapel has been a pioneer in Columbus area funeral services since its founding in the late 1800s by John D. Emmons.

In the beginning

Lobby at Myers-Reed ChapelIn 1903 his son-in-law, Frank L. Flanigan, became associated with the firm. During the next 25 years, Norval H. Hege joined the firm and together with Flanigan, they purchased the former residence of M.T. Reeves at 5th and Pearl Streets. The name was then changed to Hege & Flanigan.

Partners and new names

Wayne Reed and Homer Hull became partners in the firm from 1935 until 1949, when Hull retired due to ill health. Reed continued the business until 1960, when he was joined by Vernon Jewell and the firm was known as the Reed Funeral Home.

In 1965 due to the redevelopment of the 5th and Pearl Streets area, the funeral home moved to its current location at 3729 25th Street. The name Reed & Jewell Funeral Home evolved in 1968 when Jewell purchased Reed's interest.

A partnership to serve you

On February 28, 1981, Steven "Pat" Myers purchased the business. Myers' ownership continued until 1998, when Myers-Reed Chapel became a part of the Dignity Memorial® network, North America's largest provider of funeral, cremation and cemetery services. Myers continued with the funeral home until his retirement in December of 2005.
