History

C.M. Sloan & Sons Funeral Home started in 1887 in Cromwell, Indiana, as a furniture store and casket maker. At that time, undertaking was not the focus of the business.

Century-long history of service

Sitting area at C.M. Sloan & Sons Funeral HomeIn 1921, Chauncey Maurice Sloan bought Ryan-Melching Undertaking in Fort Wayne, Indiana, which had a storefront and parlor. Unable to secure the building on Wells Street, C.M. and his sons John, Ralph, Russell and Richard bought a house on 327 Berry Street where C.M. and his wife Sadie lived upstairs. In this house, they had a parlor on the first floor.

Around 1930, the business moved to 301 Berry Street, and in 1939, we moved into the original building here on Wells Street. During the move, C.M. was on a train to a funeral director convention in California and died, never having the opportunity to provide a funeral service out of the original building. Sadie and their 4 sons continued running the business until the 1960s, when 3 long-time employees—E.A. Flickinger, Charlie Jones and Harrison Manning—took over the business.
