A custom funeral experience
Whether you prefer a traditional funeral service or contemporary life celebration, we're there every step of the way. At McEwen Funeral Service-Pineville Chapel, families have the freedom to design a fitting tribute that represents those who have passed. Whether they loved reading or served in the military, our team will help you create a service that showcases what made your loved one special.
In addition, we write thoughtful obituaries, organize catered events, schedule flexible visitation hours and even make keepsake items for guests to take home. Funeral services should bring family and friends closer, so everyone receives the comfort they need.
Cremation services
We specialize in cremation services that honor loved ones in personalized ways, and families love our transparent pricing. With expertise in scattering ashes and a friendly team who pays attention to every detail, we provide service that is second to none.
More and more people are choosing cremation over traditional burial, but most aren’t familiar with the many options:
- a cremation without a funeral or memorial service of any kind.
- a funeral with your loved one present, followed by cremation.
- a cremation followed by a scattering, cemetery memorialization or celebration of life—or all three.
For those who wish for a more momentous memorial, Neptune Memorial Reef is an underwater cremation garden off the coast of Florida. A Celestis Memorial Spaceflight takes ashes into space for a little while or forever.
There are many options for cremation—and they're not all equal. Here's what you can expect when you choose us for your loved one's cremation:
- Custody of care guaranteed. Our custody-of-care program helps safeguard the identification of your loved one from the time we bring them into our care until the time we return them to your family. We check, cross-check and check again, every step of the way.
- Exclusive custody of your loved one. We use only crematories owned and operated by Dignity Memorial® providers or trusted partners. Once your loved one is in our custody or that of a trusted partner, they’re in our care until they’re returned to your family.
- Licensed, certified, conscientious staff. All Dignity Memorial crematory operators are licensed and certified by Cremation Association of North America, or CANA. Only one person at a time is cremated, and the cremation chamber is thoroughly cleaned before the next person is cremated.

History
McEwen Funeral Service, a family of funeral homes in Charlotte, has served the area since the early 1900s. Around 1908, R.J. McEwen began making coffins in Mint Hill, North Carolina, to help friends and neighbors who lost loved ones to a flu epidemic. R.J.'s son, Carl J. McEwen, began working with him in 1915, and they later began stocking caskets in their Mint Hill hardware store, R.J. McEwen and Son General Store. In 1921, the McEwens purchased a hearse and began servicing funerals.
Additional locations
As their business grew, R.J. and Carl opened McEwen Funeral Home of Mint Hill in 1926. In 1935, the stately funeral home was built on Matthews-Mint Hill Road, where the facility is currently located. Some reports state that people drove from miles around to see the construction of the beautiful brick building.
Building a strong reputation
McEwen Funeral Service also offered ambulance service for several decades. At the time, very few communities in the U.S. enjoyed air ambulance plane service as well, and McEwen was the sole provider in the southeast. The single engine bi-plane saved many lives in the 30s, and McEwen donated the plane to the war effort at the request of the federal government.
As a result of our high standards of quality and a strong reputation in the community, McEwen Funeral Service’s business grew rapidly. We opened a location in Monroe in 1935, and added another location on E. Morehead Street in Charlotte in 1947. We later expanded with locations in Derita in 1972, and in Pineville in 1993.
Today, we are honored to host thoughtful memorial services and funerals in Charlotte. While many aspects of our community has changed, we remain dedicated to our calling of compassionate care.
