Gary Sperla Figdore, recently of Dover, PA, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2023, at the age of 87, just shy of his 88th birthday. He was the eldest of the three sons born to the late Gerald and Dorothy Figdore. Gary was a skilled and enthusiastic electrical engineer. His education included William Penn Senior High School and an Associate’s Degree in Electrical Technology from Penn State-York. At Newark College of Engineering he earned his BS in Electrical Engineering at night school while also working full-time and raising three small children. In the late 1950's he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, stationed at Ft. Monmouth, N.J. During Gary's long career he worked at Bendix Aviation in York, and in NJ, Bell Labs, Weston Instruments, Intco, and finally, with Siemens Ltd. in NJ and FL. One of his proudest achievements was at Weston Instruments where he participated in the development of an instrument used in one of the manned moon missions. That instrument is still on the moon today! After retiring from Siemens in FL, he fully embraced his beach-bum side - boating, fishing, growing a ponytail and even sporting an earring! Gary was born in York and after pursuing careers and family in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida, returned to Dover, PA in 2006. There he took great pride in improving and decorating his home and garden. He pursued his favorite interests of reading, history, science, art and his lifelong love of small sporty cars, particularly coupes. Says long-time friend Tammy- He was a good friend and a sincere man. He loved telling me stories and cared deeply about those close to him. Gary is survived by his former wife Sherry K. Figdore and their children, Lauren (Kenneth), Kurt, and Rolf, and his former wife Joanne C. Figdore and stepchildren, Jennifer (Vincent) and Todd (Mary), brother Phillip (Arlette) and their children and grandchildren. Gary was predeceased by his brother George (Carol). Gary was a devoted supporter of The Carter Center. Donations in Gary's memory may be made to thecartercenter.org. Final arrangements were handled by the Central PA Cremation Society, with interment at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens in York, PA. We'll miss you Pop...
