Theodor was born on October 2, 1927 in Topilnytsia, Ukraine, one of ten children, to Theodore and Anna Kocur. He lived in Ukraine until 1944 when the family was caught between the war. Trying to escape from the oncoming Soviet Army, they instead were captured and required by the Nazis to work in a forced labor camp. Theodor, his parents and 3 of his sisters eventually emigrated to the United States in 1949, settling in Yonkers, NY where he lived and eventually raised his family for 55 years. He later moved to Rochester, NY in 2013 where he continued to live for the remainder of his life, first with his daughter Dorothea and son-in-law Orest and then the last several years at St. Ann’s Community where he was lovingly called “Teddy Bear” and referred to as its Mayor.
Theodor married his wife Dorothy (nee Geriak) in 1959 and was married for 54 years until her passing in 2013. He worked for many years as a draftsman with Singer Kearfott/Lockheed, until his retirement. Theodor is survived by his 3 children Edward (Kim) Kocur of Millstone, NJ, Dorothea (Orest) Torous of Rochester, NY and Daria (Joseph) Gaschler of Yonkers, NY and 5 grandchildren (Matthew, Lauren, Nicholas, Kailey and Roma). He loved gardening, listening to music and dancing. He was very proud of his Ukrainian heritage, his US citizenship and his military service. But most of all, he was proud of his family.
We’d like to extend a special Thank You to the friends and staff at St. Ann’s WCC 2100 for their care of our father for the time he lived there, but especially during his last few days. The love and compassion they showed will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in Ted’s memory to Annie’s Angel Fund, c/o St. Ann’s Home 1500 Portland Avenue, Rochester, NY 14621.
