John Tumelty passed away peacefully on July 9, 2024. He is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years, Susanne (nee Manning), his daughters Susan Wilson (Martin) and Karen, and beloved granddaughters Susie Leavey-Brosnan (John Michael) and Molly. He is also survived by his brother William (Sharon). He was predeceased by his parents Patrick and Anne (nee Reynolds), and siblings Anna, Patrick, Rosemary, Una, Kathleen, James, Geraldine, Bernard, Joseph, and Claire.
John traveled North and South America with carnivals prior to becoming a New York City police officer. He retired as a detective in 1993. He was known for his spectacular sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. He had a broad appreciation for all genres of music and people from all walks of life. He loved to cook, whether it was a spaghetti dinner at a community house or a gourmet meal crafted from leftovers. No one ever went hungry when John was around, including a menagerie of household pets. He found joy in children, which they reciprocated and he brought out the child in every person he met.
John had great compassion for all people and had the gift of exceptional conversation skills. He was kind, funny, and fun. He will be sorely missed by everyone who ever crossed his path.
A visitation for John will be held Sunday, July 14, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave, Yonkers, NY 10703. A funeral mass will occur Monday, July 15, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 10:40 AM at Christ the King Catholic Church, 740 N Broadway, Yonkers, NY 10701.
