Father Joe, as he was affectionately called by his countless friends and those he served with dedication in parishes and colleges and as simply, Joe, by his Capuchin brothers, was the only child of John Joseph Flynn and the former Beatrice Keane. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 14, 1940 and raised in Woodside, Queens, NY. After graduating from St. Teresa Elementary School in Woodside and the Capuchin Preparatory Seminary in Garrison, NY he entered the Capuchin Franciscans in August, 1958 and after studies in philosophy and theology he was ordained to the priesthood of Jesus Christ on November 11, 1966 at Sacred Heart Church in Yonkers, New York.
He subsequently earned Masters degrees in Divinity, Theology and Pastoral Counseling and a Doctorate of Ministry, each of which he used to enhance his natural affability while serving parishioners, college students and his Capuchin brothers in a series of ministerial assignments including pastoral responsibilities at Sacred Heart parish, Yonkers, NY and St. Michael's parish and high school in East New York, Brooklyn. He was also called upon to become the Director of Priestly Students in Garrison, NY and Guardian of the fraternity of St. Conrad in White Plains, NY.
Perhaps he was best known for the ministry he loved most, that of College Chaplain and Campus Minister in three colleges: Ladycliff College, Highland Falls, NY; Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY and The College of New Rochelle in New Rochelle, NY.
In his later years while residing in St. Conrad Friary, White Plains, he ministered part time as Chaplain in White Plains Hospital until his health declined. He was then assigned to the Capuchin senior friar residence of St. Clare in Yonkers and then to Cabrini Nursing Center in Dobbs Ferry, NY where he passed away peacefully.
He leaves his many devoted cousins, a host of friends and his Capuchin brothers all of whom will miss his constant upbeat positive spirit, ready smile, quick wit and inspiring example of a deeply prayerful and dedicated religious and priest.
His wake will be held at Whalen and Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Avenue, Yonker, NY on Tuesday, January 16 from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm and his funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers, NY on Wednesday, January 17 at 11:00 am He will be interred in the Friars’ cemetery there.
