Estelle E. Flammia was born November 7, 1932 in Brooklyn, New York to Fenner and Catherine Winston. She and her large family lived in many places during her father’s career as a Naval officer. Estelle attended Julia Richmond High School in New York City and worked as a telephone operator for the New York Telephone Company.
She met William Flammia, the love of her life at a chance encounter as she and three of her sisters attended a Saint Patrick’s Day dance at the Irish American Hall in Mineola, Long Island, New York. Bill and Estelle married in September, 1956. Their eldest son was born the following September. Their second son, William Scott “Billy” Flammia soon followed. They settled in Levittown, Long Island and lived there happily for over 60 years. Bill and Estelle moved to Yonkers in 2019.
Family was most important to Estelle. Her passion in life was caring for her husband and children. She worked for a short time as an office assistant for HIP of New York. She left work when her children came along. When the kids were school age, she became a school lunch/cafeteria cashier. Later she and Bill became a dynamic duo as a bus driver and matron for special needs students.
Estelle was a very talented artist. Her home and the home of others are beautifully adorned with many of her needle point, ceramic pieces and crochet blankets. Estelle enjoyed taking drives with Bill on the East end of Long Island, especially during the holiday seasons. She loved the joy that all the lights and decorations brought to her heart.
Estelle was pre-deceased by her parents, her only brother John Winston, four of her sisters, Virginia (Brennan), Catherine (Visconte), her beloved twin Evelyn Winston and most recently her baby sister Lucille Derby. She is survived by her only remaining sibling Eleanor Winston (Hamel).
She also leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted husband Bill, her faithful eldest son Thomas, his dedicated wife Genia, her son Billy, grandson’s Anthony, Justin, Nicholas and Khalid. She was also blessed to enjoy time with her great grandchildren, Giovanna Flammia, Elijah, Kacey, Kori, along with a host of loving family and friends.
A memorial visitation for Estelle will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home. A memorial funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 3, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Eugene Church, 707 Tuckahoe Rd, Yonkers, NY.
