Portland, ME- Susan Conway Snow, 81, passed away suddenly on September 26, 2024, at Maine Medical Center, with her four children by her side. She was very recently predeceased by her beloved husband, Lewis E. Snow.
Susan was born in Portland, ME on November 6, 1942, the first child of Eleanor Clancy and John Henry Conway. She spent the first few years of her life living with the extended Clancy family while her father was in France during World War II. She grew up on Highland Street in Portland with her brother John and sisters Kate and Ellen. She attended Lincoln Junior High and St. Joseph’s Academy on Stevens Avenue where she enjoyed taking piano lessons. The family spent summers at camp on Little Ossipee Lake in Waterboro with the Clancy and Tobin clans.
After attending the University of Maine in Portland for two years, Susan transferred to the University of Maine at Orono in 1963 where she met her husband, Lewis. They both graduated in 1965 and were married that July at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Portland. Susan began work as a social worker at Pineland Hospital in New Gloucester for the State of Maine. She found this work rewarding.
In 1974, Susan and Lewis moved with their four children Thomas, Michael, Susan and Anne from Portland to a farm in Cumberland where they would spend the next 40 years. Susan created a warm and beautiful home inside and out. There was no problem, need or goal that proved impossible for Susan to take on including restoring an old farmhouse, cultivating extensive vegetable and flower gardens, raising and caring for farm animals, and she even found time to make clothes for her children. Lewis had a dream of owning a farm and Susan was the perfect partner to share in this and make their dream come true.
Susan returned to work in 1980 as a buyer at the Conway family business Loring, Short & Harmon on Monument Square where she eventually became a board member. While working and raising her family Susan still found time to balance her interests and civic responsibilities.
She volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, was an active member of the Cumberland Garden Club, taught catechism for Sacred Heart Church, led Cub Scouts, enjoyed skiing, reading, boating, puzzling, knitting and quilting.
Susan and Lewis split their time between Florida and Maine for most of their retirement. They enjoyed the company of friends old and new, travelled abroad extensively and drove across the United States. Two of their last big trips were to the Galapagos Islands and Alaska. Most of all Susan loved supporting and spending time with family and especially her eight beloved grandchildren: Meghan, Brinna, Will, Caitlin, Tobin, Sam, Marion and Emily.
She is survived by her children Thomas Snow, wife Beth and their children Brinna, Caitlin, Tobin, Meghan Card and her husband RJ, Michael Snow and his partner Pate Eng, Susan Jenkins, her husband David and their sons Will and Sam, Anne Robbins her husband Peter and their daughters Marion and Emily. Her brother John Conway, wife Ellen, sister Kate Damon, husband David, and sister Ellen Barber Morse and husband Weld.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 am on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Church, 673 Stevens Avenue, Portland.
