Nancy Craig

CUMBERLAND FORESIDE - Nancy Berg Craig died peacefully in the company of her family on Friday, October 19th. Nancy was born in Portland, the daughter of Eric and Elizabeth Cushman Berg. Nancy was a descendent of the Mayflower passengers and a 12th generation Mainer. She was married to the love of her life, Robert S. Craig, Sr. for 60 years. Nancy was the proud mother of Robert S. Craig, Jr. , Charles E. Craig, and Christopher C. Craig. She is also survived by her daughters-in-law Kate Healy, Carson Craig, and Wendy Craig, grandchildren Will, Neil, and Emilie Craig and new grandchildren Emily and Seamus Healy.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents, sisters Lisa and Betty Anne, brother Eric, husband Rob, son Robbie and granddaughter Katie.

Nancy grew up in South Portland and was an outstanding student in local schools. She later attended Smith College, and graduated as an Ada Comstock Scholar with a bachelor of arts in art history.

Rob and Nancy met at a Smith – Yale mixer and were married in 1953. They initially lived on the family property in Cumberland Foreside, then moved to Portland Street in Yarmouth in the early sixties. Seven years later, the family moved to Kents Hill, after Rob’s career moved to Augusta.

Kents Hill was good fit for the family; the boys attended Kents Hill School and the area had many outlets for the family’s interests in sports. Nancy and the entire family enjoyed tennis, skiing, sailing and golf.

In 1977, the family moved to back to Cumberland Foreside, where Nancy lived until her death. She loved the oceanfront peninsula, and was responsible for the beautiful gardens.

Nancy and Rob loved to travel and enjoyed visiting the Caribbean, England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Scotland, Hawaii, Costa Rica and Baja, Mexico. Such trips usually involved sailing, golfing, tennis, skiing, or snorkeling

Nancy was an accomplished classical pianist, having studied and played until very recently. Her love of music had a big influence on her sons and grandchildren. Nancy also loved art, and devoted time to many arts charities, including The Parents Creative Arts that brought art to schools in the Augusta area, and the Portland Museum of Art where she was a docent for many years.

Nancy will be greatly missed by her friends and family. She was a beacon of optimism, and her vibrant presence and gracious, welcoming, and stimulating personality were a gift to us all.

A service will be held Saturday, November 17 at 2 pm and St. Mary’s Church in Falmouth Foreside, followed by a reception at the Portland Country Club.
