Peggy was born November 25, 1941 in Portland, Maine, the daughter of Paul and Annie “Betty” Wentworth of Freeport, Maine. Peggy spent most of her life in Freeport, graduating from Freeport High School, raising her four daughters, working for the Freeport School Department, and spending time at her South Freeport farm. Later in life, Peggy moved to Cape Neddick, Maine and purchased an inn with her, now deceased brother, Bruce Wentworth. Those who knew Peggy, knew that she spent many years restoring the inn, greeting customers with blueberry muffins each morning and walking York Beach as many mornings as she could.
Peggy will be most remembered for her love of mountain climbing, gardening, walking on the beach at her former home in York, Maine, and spending time with her family. Her warm smile, sense of humor, bright laugh and ability to make everyone feel welcome is something her entire family will deeply miss. “Grammie”, to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, will be remembered as the hard-working, loving, and caring matriarch of their family – always smiling, taking them on adventures, and wearing her iconic jeans while teaching them to bake in her kitchen.
Peggy is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Susan Wentworth of Florida; her sister, Pamela Ferland of York, Maine; and her sister, Gail Berzinis of Readfield, Maine; by her four daughters, Karen and Robert Mathias of Orlando, Florida; Tammy and Steven Doten of Phippsburg, Maine; Robin and William Dunnett Jr. of Cumberland, Maine; and Wendy and Mark Pesce of Awendaw, SC; her many grandchildren April Doten, Hilary and Gene Barber, William Dunnett III, Elizabeth Mathias, Katherine Mathias, Ashley and Wayne Frazier, Nicholas Dunnett, Michael Pesce, Charles Mathias and Jonathan Dunnett; and her great-grandchildren Ava and Wyatt Barber and Maggie Frazier; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Patricia LaRue; her brother, William Wentworth; and her brother, Bruce Wentworth.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, September 21, 2018, at Elmwood Cemetery on Elmwood, Rd in Pownal, Maine.
In lieu of flowers and cards, the family is asking for donations to be made to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (https://arlgp.org/)
