Falmouth- Lewis G. Anderson, 91, passed away at his home on October 10, 2023 with his family by his side. The son of Clifford and Hazel (Hoey) Anderson, he was born in Cumberland on January 6, 1932 and lived in Yarmouth and North Yarmouth for the majority of his life. He graduated from Greely Institute in 1949 and went right to work at the three-generation family business, Anderson and Sons. They manufactured lobster traps from oak logs, supplying 50,000 traps a year to lobstermen all along the east coast. He worked from the age of 17 until the age of 54 when he retired. In his “retirement,” he enjoyed lobstering himself, hauling 600 traps, which became his passion. When his children were young, he taught all of them how to lobster and set the girls up with their own boat and the boys with another. After he “retired” from lobstering, he started making cutting boards in his “workshop” in the garage. He marketed and sold them at craft fairs and gift shops until he was 85. He also made doll houses and barns for his grandchildren.
When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed golfing with family and friends and bowling with his wife Janice. He was proud of his pacers, especially his horse Trusty Star. He loved dogs and always had a dog or two around. Truly a family man, he enjoyed camping in the summer with his family and skiing in the winter. He and Janice traveled around the country 3 times in their camper, visiting all 50 states including Alaska, and they also enjoyed visiting Hawaii and Europe. They spent 16 winters together in Naples, Florida. He made friends easily and was always interested in talking to and learning from others. Above all else, he was an attentive and nurturing father and husband who had a heart of gold.
He was predeceased by his son Clayton Anderson, his grandson Daniel Anderson, and his 3 brothers.
He is survived by his wife Janice, of 64 years, his son Dana Anderson and his wife Barbara of Windham, his daughters, Deborah Anderson of Cumberland Foreside, Rebecca Marr and her husband John Jr. of Falmouth, and Elizabeth Laverriere and her husband Joseph of Portland, his grandchildren, Amanda, Sara, Julia, Matthew, Brooke, Anna, Stephanie, Andrea, Jennifer, Joseph, and Brian, his 12 great grandchildren, and his dog Suzy. He is also survived by his sister Janet Arey of Monmouth.
His life will be celebrated at a small, private family event.
