Joseph James Sorbello

He was born and raised in the Syracuse, NY area. Joe attended Kings College in Wilkes- Barre Pennsylvania, with an internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and graduated as a Certified Surgical Physician Assistant. Joe then came to Maine, where he joined a busy cardiothoracic surgical practice at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Before settling in Cumberland in the early 1990’s, Joe had endless love for the great state of Maine. He chose to live in a state where he could “vacation where he worked”. He marveled in all the wonders his true home had to offer. From the raging white water rivers where he could be found kayaking or canoeing, to the snow capped mountains where he was a member of the national ski patrol and was the on call provider at ski resort clinics.

The wooded, rural forests of Salem Township was a like a second home to Joe, where he spent years developing his property and the cabin he affectionately called the Baker Hill Bunker. Joe was similarly drawn to the rugged coastline and the quiet farmland of Cumberland County.

Joe loved anything outdoors and was always up for a hunting or fishing trip with his beloved friends he came to know as brothers. He formed an extended family of loved ones. Joe was the founding father of the annual “CiderFest”, where friends and families would gather annually to celebrate the fall harvest of local Maine apples and produce large quantities of cider to share, using a press handed down from his grandfather.

Joe was a loving and giving person. He was always available to lend a hand on projects and chores, while making it fun and entertaining. He enjoyed a large network of friends who became his family in Maine over the years. They always made sure he felt at home, there was always a place for him at the table for holidays or a quick pop in right around suppertime.

Joe devoted himself to the care of others as a Physician Assistant. He volunteered his medical service to those less fortunate and would frequently visit the Dominican Republic and Haiti to help those in need. He founded and operated Medical Marijuana Practitioners of Maine and played a significant role in advancing legislation surrounding Maine’s medical marijuana program.

Joe is survived by his parents, Joseph and Donna Sorbello of Cicero, NY; his brother, Brian Sorbello Cicero NY and his nephew Nathan Sorbello, who is currently serving overseas with the United States Marine Corps.
