John was born to Robert and Alyce Murphy on September 12, 1944 in Mineola, New York. He graduated from New Milford High School in Connecticut and attended Windham College in Vermont until he joined the U.S. Army. John proudly served his country and earned a Bronze Star upon his return from Vietnam. After his military service, John started as a traveling salesman and worked his way up to earn the title of President of Torrington Brass and Steel in Torrington, CT. After a long career, John retired and moved to Maine.
John is survived by his wife, Judith, of 53 years; his daughter, Kristen and her spouse, Ari; his son, Chris; his granddaughter, Abbie; his siblings, Patricia and Gerry, and many other friends and family who loved him dearly. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Alyce.
John was known for his love of boating on Sebago Lake. He enjoyed spending summers on the lake, giving boat tours, storytelling, and providing laughs with his “dad” jokes. John loved watching sports, especially Notre Dame, tending to his lawn, watching his granddaughter’s soccer games, and ensuring his family did what made them happy.
The family is planning a service to be held at a later date at the Southern Maine Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Springvale, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s name to the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House 11 Hunnewell Road, Scarborough, ME 04074.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.LindquistFuneralHome.com for the Murphy family.
