Yarmouth – John T. (Tom) Gorman, Jr., 79, died Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at his Bay Square at Yarmouth residence after a long illness. A lifelong resident of Yarmouth, Tom was born in Nashua, N.H. on May 25, 1930 the son of John T. and Barbara B. Gorman.
Tom attended Yarmouth schools and was active in the Boy Scouts, the national defense effort, and qualified for his pilot’s license at the age of 17. He graduated from Cheverus High School in 1949. The yearbook noted, “Tom is a swell fellow who never says much but is always willing to help. One of the ‘brains’ of the Senior class.”
Tom received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Fairfield University in 1954. He was a member of the L.L.Bean family and spent his working years with the Company. Tom had many friends and was a longtime member of the Yarmouth Lions Club, the Men’s Club and the Sacred Heart Church. He traveled extensively and enjoyed coaching youth baseball, motorcycling, snowmobiling and flying his Piper airplane.
During his later years, Tom established a philanthropic foundation and was very active in aiding underprivileged residents of the state of Maine. Beneficiaries included those with mental health problems, cancer, those in need of food and aging issues. Thousands of very poor Maine people have benefited and will continue to benefit from Tom’s generosity.
He is survived by his two brothers and their wives; James W. Gorman and wife Maureen and Leon A. Gorman and wife Lisa; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Family and friends are invited to attend visitation on Monday, February 22 from 2-4p.m. and 7-9p.m. at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on
Tuesday, February 23 at 10 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yarmouth. Burial will take place in the spring at Holy Cross Cemetery, Yarmouth.
