North Yarmouth, ME- Dorothy Louise Hayward, 91, of North Road, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2023, with her family by her side. She was born on May 5, 1931 in South Portland, Maine, a daughter of Harold and Madelyn (Wright) Freeman. Dorothy graduated from North Yarmouth Academy. In 1951, she married the love of her life, James William Hayward, Sr. Together they raised three sons, James Jr., Dean and Andrew Hayward. She was a member of the Westcustago, Granite Grange, a lifelong member of the North Yarmouth Congregational Church where she was a Deacon and 4-H Leader of the Cumberland County 4-H Sheep club. What had started out as a 4-H project with her boys turned into her own registered sheep farm that would be named, “Poplar Knoll Farm”. She passed on her love for raising and showing sheep to her sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In 2014, she was awarded a lifetime achievement by the Maine Sheep Breeders Association. She is best remembered for her love of her boys and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband James, a brother, Harold Freeman, Jr. and a son, Dean Hayward, Sr. She is survived by her sons James Sr., Andrew and his wife Lisa; grandchildren, Dean Jr., Darcie, Dustin, Dana, John, Adam and Ashley; great-grandchildren, Drew, Patricia, Brooklyn, Jace, Kaylee, Colton and William; daughter in laws Donna Hayward and Mary Wiers.
Visiting hours will be held from 5-7 pm on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A funeral will be held at 11 am on Friday, March 10, 2023 at North Yarmouth Congregational Church, 3 Gray Road, North Yarmouth. Burial will be later in the spring at Walnut Hill Cemetery in North Yarmouth.
