Portland – Arlene S. Thompson, 82, died unexpectedly, Sunday July 11, 2010 at the Maine Medical Center. Born November 26, 1927 in Underhill, VT. She was the daughter of the late Kenneth C. and Elsie Metcalf Tucker. Her husband, Benjamin Thompson, predeceased her in 2002.
She was a graduate of Cape Elizabeth High School and Westbrook College. After college, Arlene worked as a legal secretary in her husband’s law firm until their marriage in 1949.
After that, she devoted her life to her family and helping others. She volunteered extensively at the Pineland Hospital in the 1960’s. Visits to Bay Square were especially enjoyed by her, but closest to her heart was the Casco Bay YMCA. Here she volunteered many hours, answering phones, greeting members and giving tours. Most importantly, was her help in developing the Y’s Adaptive Services Program.
Arlene was a member of the Portland Country Club where she enjoyed golfing along with playing tennis and bridge. She loved Gospel Music, especially that of David Phelps, attending several of his concerts. Lastly, Arlene “loved chocolate”!
She is survived by her four children; Cindy Washbourne and her husband Jim of Sutton, MA., Suzanne Nelson and her husband Michael and Nathan Thompson both of Yarmouth, and Tucker Thompson and his wife Hilary Pesarik of Freeport, her sister; Genevieve Fleming and her husband Bill of VT., her brother; Wendall Tucker and his wife Helen of South Portland, eleven grandchildren; Courtney Washbourne, Ethan Washbourne, Hilary Wallace, Sarah Arnold, Benjamin Nelson, Catherine Arlene Thompson, Grace Thompson, Pearce Thompson, Paige Thompson, Marion Thompson and Crosby Pesarik-Thompson, and two great grandchildren; Kiley Wallace and Adalyn Wallace.
Arlene spent the last day of her life doing what she loved most, volunteering and socializing at the YMCA.
Visiting hours will be Wednesday July 14, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindquist Funeral Home One Mayberry Lane Yarmouth.
Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday July 15, 2010 at the Casco Bay YMCA Airnasium 14 Old S. Freeport Rd. Freeport with Pastor Joseph A. Campbell of White Pine Community Church officiating.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery Portland.
