John was born on May 28, 1922 in Seattle, Washington to Louis and Mamie Redmond. He attended O'Dea High School in Seattle. He started college at Seattle University, but left to serve with the Merchant Marine during World War II. After the war ended, John returned to Seattle where he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Psychology at the University of Washington. While pursuing his degrees, he met and married the love of his life Jean.
John moved to the Yakima area in 1952 to work at Moxee High School as a teacher of English, French, and Latin. Soon thereafter, he earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Washington. He then joined the Yakima County Cooperative Special Education Program as a school psychologist. In 1964, John joined Yakima Valley College as the Director of Counseling and as a professor of psychology. He retired from YVCC in 1983, but performed private practice work for a few years after that before fully retiring.
John enjoyed a number of hobbies. He loved music, especially Dixieland jazz, and played the piano. He took pleasure in capturing and preserving things he loved through audio tapes and photography.
