John was born on June 21, 1923 on the family farm in Solen, North Dakota to Peter and Anna Mary (Schaff) Doll.
John grew up on the farm. He married Magdalyn Ehlis; they were married for seventy years before his wife’s passing. After John’s dad retired from the farm, John decided to try farming. After a few bad years of being “hailed” out, he decided to give it up! By that time, he had a wife and five children to support. The family then moved to Mandan, North Dakota. In 1950, John moved his family to Yakima so he could find work. He worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad until 1960. He then worked as a custodian for the Yakima School District until his retirement.
John very much enjoyed German music. He was a drummer in various bands for many years. He and Mom enjoyed traveling to German music festivals. It was so amazing to watch them dance the Polka together. They also enjoyed many of Senior Citizens’ tour trips. Making German sausage was a specialty of his that he passed on to his children, along with the secret recipe! He enjoyed maintaining a park-like setting on his acreage in East Selah until health problems prevented him from doing much of the work. John enjoyed decorating his place with a wide assortment of cement statues and animal figurines.
He is survived by his daughter Marilyn (Dick) Farris, sons, Mark (Sandi) Doll and James Doll. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Monzetta Doll and son-in-law Dennis Fisher. Surviving him are grandchildren: Brenda (Rich), Mark (Jami), Raelynn (Josh), Troy (Cathryn), Tara (Matt), Teresa (Steve), Tonia, Brock (Krista), Jamie (Chris); great-grandchildren: Brandon, Ashley, Briana, Mathew, Maddie, Emmy, Ellie, Jayce, Joslynn, Jance, Justin, Mara, Farris, Josh (Lelia), Danielle (Robert), Zach, Jessie, Peyton, Alexia, Jackson and Chanell; great-great grandchildren: William, Hunter, Thomas and Dean. Also surviving him are brothers Bob (Rita) Doll and Fritz Doll.
