Glenda Pauline (Sprenkel) Rider, 93, passed away September 9, 2012 at Good Samaritan Center in Yakima, WA from complications of a broken hip. She was born in Coshocton, Ohio on November 22, 1918 to William and Carrie Sprenkel. Being raised in Coshocton, which is close to a large Amish community, and coming from a large family, Glenda had acquired her love for cooking, baking and canning. Many of her dishes had an Amish flair to them, and her home made egg noodles and beef roast were always a favorite Sunday meal. Her pecan, coconut cream pies and German chocolate cakes sometimes never made it out of the kitchen at potlucks, being eaten by the servers beforehand.
After graduating from Coshocton High School in 1936, Glenda worked at a local glove manufacturer that made gloves for the soldiers of WWII.
Glenda met Jack Rider from Roseville, Ohio and they were married on December 29, 1945. On their way home from Coshocton to Roseville in a snow storm, they slid into the police station in Zanesville. After the police pushed them back onto the road, they spent their honeymoon in a local hotel.
Glenda’s love was roses and all types of flowers. She was a member of the local floral club in Zanesville. She entered her arrangements at local shows and always liked to make arrangements no matter what time of the year it was.
Glenda also volunteered at the Local Starlight School in Zanesville for people with disabilities. She was always happy to dance with them and play games. Many recognized her at the local mall and would say hi and give her a hug.
After residing in Zaneville for over 35 years, Glenda and Jack moved to Yakima in 1986, after Jack retired from Ohio Bell Telephone Company several years before.
Any time Glenda came over to Craig & Monica’s house, their rescue dogs were always on her lap. She will be missed by them and all the lives she touched.
Glenda had two sons, Steven Rider (Carol) of Roseville, MN and daughter, Katie Rogers of Seattle and Craig Rider (Monica) and daughter Brittnee of Yakima. Glenda was a great Grandma to Benjamin Clay Rogers, son of Ty and Katie Rogers of Seattle. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Rider, her parents, brothers Ray, Clarence, Raymond and Harry Sprenkel, and sisters, Irene (Kratz) and Goldie (Woodrome) Sprenkel.
The family would like to thank Dr. George Garfein, Dr. Lorie Smith and the staff at Chesterley Meadows and Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Center for Mom’s great care over the years, and also Father Darrell for his special blessing and support to the family.
