Dorothy Jean Withers

Dorothy Jean Dahlin Withers, born in Seattle on May 28, 1922, died on August 23, 2014 at her home in Wynwood of Yakima after a short battle with cancer. She was the much-loved adopted daughter of Bess and Elmer Dahlin of Selah, with whom she lived, along with her older brother Bob, until she married in 1942. In 1955, Jean married Richard Gail “Dick” Withers, and they resided in Terrace Heights until his death in 2002. Jean remained in the same home in Terrace Heights until she moved to Wynwood of Yakima a few years ago. She loved her house in Terrace Heights, where she gardened, cared for animals, and brought back the fruits of any yard sale within walking distance. Jean was an adventuresome soul who loved a drive up into the mountains or anywhere, and she was ready to go at the drop of a hat. She also loved going to restaurants for a lunch or dinner out.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brother, Robert I. Dahlin; her sister-in-law, Mary Jean Mead Dahlin Rolfe; her niece, Anne Dahlin Porter; and her nephew, Robert M. Dahlin. She is survived by stepson, Rick Withers; stepdaughter, Vickie (nee) Withers; and niece, Mary Dahlin.

Over the years, there have been many people who have reached out and befriended Jean. Thank you to all of you in her Terrace Heights neighborhood and at Wynwood of Yakima for all that you did for Jean. Your effort and attention made her feel special. Your many kindnesses were appreciated and added quality to her life. A special thanks goes to Katy Witke, who was her caregiver from 2002 to 2009. You became her friend as well as caregiver, and she loved you.

There will be no formal memorial service for Jean; however, if anyone is so inclined, please make a donation in her name to Heartlinks Hospice & Palliative Care or any animal rescue agency of your choice. Jean loved all animals, and this would be a fitting tribute.
