John A. Fiocca, Jr., 72, of Columbus, Ohio, died tragically on December 11, 2022 in an automobile accident. He was born on October 8, 1950 in Akron, Ohio, the eldest son of the late Betty J. Fiocca and the late John A. Fiocca, Sr.
John attended Archbishop Hoban High School, then Firestone High School in Akron, where he graduated in 1968. He was an outstanding student and athlete in baseball and football, and was active at St. Hilary Church. He received an academic scholarship to attend Miami University in Ohio, where he graduated cum laude in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. While at Miami, he was a Resident Advisor, served on the Student Senate, and received numerous honors, including Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, The Outstanding Miami Student Award, and other awards. John then went to law school at Case Western University College of Law in Cleveland, graduating with a Juris Doctor in 1975.
Following graduation, John began practicing law in Ohio, and was subsequently admitted to practice in various courts, including the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1999, John joined the national firm of Rolfes Henry Co., LPA, and became a partner and shareholder. John’s legal career spanned more than 40 years, and he represented both individuals and businesses in the areas of commercial and construction litigation, product liability, professional liability litigation, and property and casualty insurance litigation. He especially enjoyed helping to mentor the next generation of attorneys. John was a member of the Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys, the Ohio State Bar Association, and Columbus Bar Association.
John was deeply religious and loved people. He always had a story to share. He was also a history scholar and American patriot who cherished the United States. John will be remembered for his tremendous sense of humor, love of music, culinary skills, and kindness. He attended Linworth United Methodist Church with his wife. Despite his busy schedule, he always made time for his family and friends, and for helping the less fortunate.
In 2005, John married Patricia Gallagher Fiocca, who survives. In addition, he is survived by his sister Sheila (John) Hutzler, brother Greg (Gretchen) Fiocca, brother Mark (Jacki) Fiocca, his niece Sarah (George) Psihountakis and their children, Lythia and Leonidas, his nephew Mario Fiocca, his niece Elena Fiocca, his brother-in-law Everett (Becky) Gallagher, sister-in-law Linda (Dave) Schmidt, along with their children and grandchildren, and other beloved family members and many dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 18, 2022, between 3:00 and 6:00 pm at the Schoedinger Worthington Chapel, 6699 North High Street, Worthington, OH 43085. A funeral service and celebration of John’s life will be held there on Monday, December, 19, 2022 at 11:00 am, with a luncheon immediately following at the funeral home. Burial will occur on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at 11:00 am in Glen Rest Memorial Estates, Reynoldsburg, OH.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to the St. Hilary School Scholarship Fund, St. Hilary Parish, 2750 W. Market St., Fairlawn, OH 44333 (supporting elementary school children in financial need) or the Community Shelter Board, 355 East Campus View Blvd., Suite 250, Columbus, OH 43235 (addressing the needs of homeless families in Central Ohio).
