Gary Lee Harvey, age 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones at Westerwood Assisted Living/Memory Care on Sunday, October 30, 2022 after a long battle with many health concerns. He was born on September 1, 1946 in Cleveland to parents Harry Blaine and Roberta Maxine (Bever) Harvey. The family moved to Mansfield the next week, but Gary remained an avid Cleveland Browns, Indians, and Cavaliers fan.
During high school, Gary was a stock clerk at Big Bear Grocery. In 1965 he was graduated from Mansfield Senior High and later earned an associate’s degree from Mansfield Business College. After high school Gary worked on the White Westinghouse line producing dryers.
Drafted into the United States Army during the biggest call of the Vietnam War, Gary served as a NCO drill sergeant at Fort Bragg, SC. After he was honorably discharged from the service he worked for Empire Steel in inside sales. Gary later was an Allstate insurance agent for 37 years, starting out on the Sears booth at the Richland Mall. Eventually he owned his own agency with his best friend, Gordon Moxley.
Gary married Rebecca Bauer in 1970 and they had two children, Scott (Julie) Harvey of Worthington and Traci (Brian) Wertz of Lewis Center. Divorced 1982. In 1985 Gary married Holly Shiderly and together they had a son Matthew (Danielle) Harvey of Prairie Grove, Arkansas. Holly and Gary resided in Lexington before moving to Westerville in 2013. Gary was raised in Mansfield Park Avenue Baptist church; later joined First Presbyterian Church in Mansfield. When he and Holly moved to the Columbus area, he joined the First Presbyterian Church of Westerville.
Gary was a Mason (Mansfield Lodge #35) and a member of the Baku Grotto ; he enjoyed annual golf trips to Myrtle Beach with the Grotto. As a member of the Mansfield Elks, he bowled with friends on a travel league. Gary also belonged to the Sons and Daughters of Herman. An avid golfer, Gary was proud of his hole-in-one at Possum Run Golf Course!
Gary was a devoted father. He enjoyed umpiring for Scott’s little league team as well as watching Scott play football, Traci play volleyball, and Matt play soccer and dive.
In Westerville, Gary was active in the New Neighbors League of Columbus and enjoyed euchre, golf, poker and ROMEOS with the club. He also played golf with the Westerville Senior Mens Golf League. He loved listening to the Oldies, being outside and working in his yard. In their later years Gary and Holly enjoyed being Winter Texans and Florida snowbirds.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, sister Irene (William) VanScoder, brother David (Carol) Harvey and grandson Connor Lee Harvey.
Additional survivors include sister Janet Walker and six grandchildren: Katie and Drew Harvey, Brian and Maggie Wertz (all of the Columbus area) and Kennedy and Maddie Harvey of Arkansas. Several nieces and nephews also remain. Gary will be especially missed by his friends at church and New Neighbors.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2022 from 3-4 p.m.at First Presbyterian Church, 41 West College Avenue, Westerville, OH 43081. Memorial Service at 4:00 p.m., Rev. Mark Gauen officiating. Reception following in the church basement (accessible by elevator).
Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Clark, PA at a later date.
