Ellen Catherine “Cathy” McCloskey, 80, of Columbus, passed away on January 28, 2024. She was born in Wareham, Massachusetts to the late Robert Lee and Ellen Catherine (Guilfoyle) Andrew. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Trisha McClain.
Cathy attended Elmira College where she received a degree in education. She worked as an English teacher in several school districts in Elmira, NY, Muncie, IN, Columbus, OH, and Pittsburgh, PA, where she touched the lives of numerous students. Cathy was also a gifted harpist and piano teacher, giving the gift of music to numerous students as well. She was additionally an accomplished interior designer, and, after retiring from teaching, focused her practice on kitchen design. Her favorite hobby was spoiling her many grandchildren. She also enjoyed tending to her beloved dogs, and especially breeding Yorkshire Terriers. After putting her two sons through The Ohio State University, she developed a strong tie to the University and was an avid fan of the Buckeyes.
Cathy will be greatly missed by her husband and best friend of 59 years, Lawrence “Larry” McCloskey; her sons, Christopher (Jennifer) and Michael (Angela) McCloskey, her sisters, Margie (Jim) Giragosian, Mary (Richard) Evans, and her brother, Robert (Anne) Andrew; her grandchildren, Jeffrey Schmittauer, Nick Christensen, Kierstin Haislar, Brian McClain, Cameron McCloskey, Mark McCloskey, Ella Slentz, Mary McCloskey, and Seren Slentz; and her loving dog, Carlyle.
Cathy’s family will welcome friends at the Schoedinger Worthington funeral home, 6699 North High Street on Sunday, February 4, 2024. A funeral celebrating Cathy’s life will be held at 3:00pm and her family will receive friends from 1:00pm until the start of the service.
