Jerome Myers

(November 6, 1923 – February 15, 2012)

Jerome Myers, 88, died February 8, 2012 with his devoted wife, Frances, by his side in Astoria, Queens at Mount Sinai Hospital.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at First Reform Church of Astoria where he was an active member for several years.

He was born November 6, 1923, in Manhattan, New York to Florence Pinkney. He was affectionately nicknamed Pete by his loving Aunt Thomas.

Pete was a labourer most of his life and was a retired Teamster. As a young man he fell in love with Frances Brown. They had three rambunctious boys: Reggie, Jerry, and Ernie. They raised their family in New York and taught their sons the value of respect, hard work, and family. Pete and Frances were happily married for 68 years.

He was born during the Harlem Renaissance and lived to be a participant of the Civil Rights Movement. He was a Mason, a member of the NAACP, and the Manager of the Astoria Tigers. In the latter part of his life, he was the Treasurer of the Senior Citizens of Astoria in which he enjoyed many of their outings and events.

His interests included family, baking, bowling, and playing cards. He devoted much of his time and energy to being a grandfather and a member of the First Reform Church of Astoria. He will always be remembered for his big smile, echoing laugh, and outgoing and fun loving ways.

Mr. Myers is survived by his wife, Frances Myers; 2 sons and their spouses, Jerome and Maria Myers and Ernest and Helena Myers; his 6 grandchildren, Joseph, Larry, Tanya, Tammy, Crystal, and Ernie; a host of great-grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; and several loving family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Reginald Myers.
