Anne was born in Scranton, PA and was the only child of the late John W. and Agnes Gaffney Boland. She graduated from St. Agnes Academic School in College Point, Long Island, New York in 1942. In 1946, she received a BA, Cum Laude, from Marywood University, Scranton, PA. She received a Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University in 1948 and a Master of Arts in Sociology from New York University in 1961.
She spent most of her professional career in the Department of Social Work at Saint Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in New York City. She joined the department in 1948 as a Social Worker and retired in 1990 as the Director of the Department of Social Work and Discharge Planning Coordinator. In 1954 she served Epidemic Duty in Phoenix, Arizona for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.
Anne was a New York State Certified Social Worker. She was a Charter Member of the National Association of Social Workers and a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers. She was a Fellow of the Academy of Certified Social Workers and a Life Fellow of the American Orthopsychiatric Association.
She served as Treasurer and member of the Executive Committee of the American Hospital Association, Society of Hospital Social Work Directors, New York City Chapter. She was a member of the Executive Committee and Chairperson of the Sub-Committee on Criteria for the New York Regional Social Work Professional Standards Review Committee.
Anne was also a member of the American Sociological Association, the National Conference of Catholic Charities and the Council on Social Work Education.
She was a member of Beta Lambda Tau, Delta Epsilon Sigma and Alpha Kappa Delta honor societies. Anne was listed in Who’s Who of American Women and Who’s Who in the East – Twelfth Edition.
She was an active member of Saint Joan of Arc Church in Jackson Heights for many years. She served as an Eucharist Minister, was a member of the Parish Council and chaired the Bereavement Group.
Anne is survived by many loving relatives and dear friends including her goddaughter Ellen Dotto and her cousins Linda Fannon, Kathleen Longo, Linda Abraham, Maureen Boland, Kathleen Hansen and Noreen Maggio, as well as her dear friends Arline Johnson and Jill Yardley.
