Born on December 9, 1939, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he was known for his bright spirit, infectious laughter, and deep love for his family.
George graduated from Edison High School in Northeast Minneapolis and continued his education at the University of Minnesota, where he earned degrees in Economics and History. He found true love with Magdalene (Maggie), whom he met at a singles event at St. Clements Church, where they later married in 1963. Together, they raised three daughters, living in Columbia Heights for 27 years before moving to Woodbury in their retirement years. George was a proud father and a devoted family man, teaching his daughters the values of hard work and perseverance.
George worked for the State of Minnesota Highway Department as a Review Appraiser for 40 years and was known for his diligence and expertise. Earlier in his career, he also served six years in the Minnesota National Guard. After retirement, he started his own business, providing review appraisals on the side, and truly enjoyed his work.
He enjoyed golfing but especially loved lap swimming at the YMCA, where he formed many friendships. He also had a passion for fishing and hunting, often spending time in his favorite spots in Northern Minnesota. His love for the outdoors brought him joy and peace. George was also actively involved in the men’s club at Guardian Angels in Woodbury, where he especially enjoyed bartending at events.
In recent years, George was grateful for the friends and connections he made at his residence at New Perspective in Woodbury, where he received assistance from the caring staff. Their support enriched his life and allowed him to maintain meaningful relationships.
George is survived by his three daughters, Charlene Eckenroth, Jane (Mike) Loretz, and Anne (Alan) Martin; his sister, Joanne Garfield; six beloved grandchildren: Matthew (Arely) Loretz, Michelle (Matthew) Anderson, Logan Loretz, Nicole (Taylor) Diaz, Sean Martin, and Sarah Freund; and two great-grandchildren, Charley and Ezekiel. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Magdalene (Szutz) Eckenroth; his parents, George and Josephine Eckenroth; and relatives Margarete and Dean Mundahl, Maria Homstad, and brother in law Lawrence Garfield, along with several other beloved family members.
In his honor, the family encourages sharing stories and laughter, reflecting the joy he brought to so many lives.
