It is with deep regret and profound sadness that the family of Alex announces his passing on August 1, 2021 at the age of 91 in the Broadview Union Hospital, Broadview Saskatchewan.
Alex was predeceased by his wife Verna and is survived by his son Jim (Cheryl) and their sons Brandon (Jenna) and Thomas (Whitney) and daughter Heather (Larry) and their children Robyn (Larry) and Chris (Crystal); great-grandchildren Stella and Hendrix; sister-in-law Florence Weber, many nieces, nephews, friends and special friend Anne Marie Lang.
Dad was born and schooled in Broadview. He spent two years in the Reserves, leaving in 1949 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant to attend Success Business College from October 1949 to April 1950.
Dad returned to join and eventually become a partner in the family business, which he operated with his brother Duncan until Duncan’s passing in 1995 then continued to operate the store until it was destroyed by fire in 2003. As part of his commitment to his retail career Dad sat on the Board of Directors of Merchant’s Consolidated Ltd out of Winnipeg for a number of years and was a member of the Local Chamber of Commerce.
Dad was a community leader and an integral part of the community serving on Town Council from 1960 to 1964 and Mayor from 1969 to 1972. He was also affectionately and accurately known as the community historian and enjoyed working at the museum as a volunteer. He was a founding member of the Broadview and District Lions Club, served as a trustee for Centennial Lodge Trust Fund and took great pride in being the Chair of the 2005 Saskatchewan Centennial Committee and being recognized by CTV as a Home Town Hero. He most recently led the Lions cenotaph reparation project.
Dad took great pride and was meticulous in anything he did and his yard is a testament to that.
Dad was an avid fisherman and bird watcher. He provided a home for the annual martin migration every spring and was a bingo caller extraordinaire and master ticket seller. Alex loved his community and was never afraid to show his pride. He was a volunteer for Communities in Bloom, the Handi Bus and Citizens on Patrol.
Beyond all his accomplishments and interests, we would like to mention that he was an incredible conversationalist. He was curious, intellectual and had a great sense of humour. These are traits that made spending time with him a joy. Dad will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A graveside service will be held at a later date. Please watch this website for updates.
We would like to thank the nursing staff of Regina General Hospital Critical Care and Surveillance unit, Kipling Integrated Health Centre and Broadview Union Hospital for their exemplary and compassionate care.
We would ask that in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alex be made to the Broadview and District Health Care Foundation, Box 670, Broadview, SK, S0G 0K0
