It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, great grandfather and loving husband on October 27, 2023 at home. He leaves to mourn his wife Ruth, son Bruce Careless (Sheila), daughter Heather Jenkins (Chris), grandchildren, Maggie and Matthew Careless (Sara and great grandson James), Jamie Newransky and family, Bryce and Katelyn Jenkins and several cousins. He was predeceased by his father Leonard Careless in 1973 and his mother Mary in 1975.
Bill was born May 7,1928 in Watrous, Saskatchewan. The family moved to Emerson, Manitoba in 1931where Bill received his education. After graduating from The University of Manitoba with his Bachelor of Science degree, he became a geological engineer for Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting in Flin Flon for 5 years - work he really enjoyed. In 1954 he moved to Winnipeg and commenced working for Eaton's. There he held several positions, the last before retirement as Payroll Manager for Western Canada.
In 1955, he married Ruth McKitrick. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage with their children and grandchildren, the centre of their lives. As the family grew up they took many trips throughout Canada and the northern U.S.A. Following Bill's retirement he and Ruth continued to enjoy travelling to England and Scotland to visit his relatives and to Hawaii, although the Canadian Rockies remained a favourite destination. Bill was a long time member of Norwood United Church where he served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, Cub leader and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. With the amalgamation of three churches, he later became a member of St. Mary's Road United Church. Throughout the years, he was a regular blood donor, donating close to 125 pints.
Bill was particularly noted for quietly helping others – children, grandchildren, neighbours and friends or anyone in need. No task was too great or too small and no time was too early or too late. All knew he was there for them twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
A service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving for his life will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, November 10 at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg.
Interment at the Crystal City cemetery will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Heart and Stroke Foundation and CNIB Guide Dogs.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.thomsoninthepark.com for the Careless family.
