So Shueng (Wong) Choy, passed away peacefully at home after a lengthy illness, on June 3rd, 2024. She was born on January 3,1930 in Sui Bo County, China. So is survived by her loving sons, Bob Bok Keung and Dan Yew Fay (Julie), grandchildren Melissa Yee Lai, Jeremy Dee Ming, Jasmyne May Lai, Mackenzie Dee Wai, Nicole Li Lai, Christian Dee Wah, Alex Dee Moon and great-grandchildren, Ben Wai Moon and Alya Li Dan. So was predeceased by her son, Fred Lun-Fai, (2002) and her husband of sixty years, Ben Wing Chek (2008).
So Shueng immigrated to Canada on December 19th,1964 and worked in the family’s Hong Kong Restaurant near Portage and Main. When the restaurant gave way to the new development in 1965, So moved to the garment industry and developed many long-lasting friendships. In 1984, So, Ben and Fred opened Golden Star, a popular Chinese takeout in St. Boniface.
So was known for her generous spirit, kindness, selflessness, sewing talents and for her delicious culinary creations at many of the family dinners. Her passion was her garden that she lovingly planted every year with an array of vegetables that were family favourites. The centre of her life were her sons, their families and her grandchildren/great-grandchildren. She was one who gave from her heart. She will be missed immensely, more than she will ever know.
The funeral service on Monday, June 10th at 10:00 AM, at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway.
