(nee MACLEOD)
November 9, 1923 - December 2, 2014
It is with great sadness we say goodbye to Bobbie, who passed away peacefully with family at her side at the age of 91. Mom will always be in our hearts and in our memories.
Bobbie was predeceased in 2012 by her husband of 61 years, David Kinnell Grant.
She is survived by her children, Jamie (Sheila and grandchildren Victoria and Macleod) of Calgary and Susan (Mark and grandchildren Callum and Tiegan) of Auckland, New Zealand as well as her sister Audrey Nutter, of Winnipeg.
Bobbie was born in Winnipeg, the daughter of George and Mabel Macleod. Growing up in River Heights she excelled at many sports including basketball, volleyball and speed skating. Summers were spent with her family at Victoria Beach at the Macleod cottage at 223 Fifth Avenue. Following graduation from Kelvin High School, Bobbie attended Russell Business College. After working for a couple of years in the Winnipeg business community she chose to pursue a career in nursing. She graduated in 1946 from the Winnipeg General Hospital and moved to Los Angeles CA to work at the Good Samaritan Hospital. She took the opportunity to live with family members of the Macleod clan that had settled in Pasadena CA.
Following Dave’s persistent pursuit of her hand in marriage, Bobbie left California behind to return to Winnipeg. They were married in April 1951 and made their first home at the Layton apartments on Corydon Avenue. They moved to Ruttan Bay in Ft. Garry to raise their family and eventually to Kingston Row in St. Vital.
She was a dedicated and devoted Mom, managing home and kids as Dave’s business had him travelling frequently. This included transporting Susan and Jamie to their many sporting events and on occasion meant getting half of Jamie’s hockey team to their next game somewhere in the city. Bobbie’s sporting passion was tennis which she enjoyed at the Winnipeg Winter Club during the winter and on the courts at Victoria Beach during the summer.
Bobbie and Dave first met at Victoria Beach and the beach became their second home. The Grant cottage at 126 Birch Avenue has always been a hub of activity. Tennis gatherings, golf tournaments, friends dropping by on their way to or from the bakery and of course, many a Thanksgiving dinner. There were the adventures of cooking the Thanksgiving turkey in the wood stove or lighting the coal oil lamps when the power went out. The mission one summer was to collect rocks from Arthur Beach for the fireplace Johnny Ateah was to build at the cottage. It was Mom who pulled the wagon back to the cottage every day. So much joy and laughter was shared with dear friends and family at Victoria Beach.
Mom was a quiet pillar of strength that bound her family together as well as those around her. Her strength and resolve never became more apparent as in the years following her stroke as she strived to overcome all the challenges and hardships presented her.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff of the West Park Manor for the loving and compassionate care they provided Bobbie as well as Dave during the time the West Park Manor was their home.
A memorial service for Bobbie was held at the Qualico Family Centre in Assiniboine Park, 330 Assiniboine Park Drive, Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 31, 2015.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba at www.alzheimer.mb.ca or 204-943-6622.
