Mom was born in Winnipeg on October 7th, 1928 to Annie and Norman MacKay and was raised in the Riverview area. Madge graduated with a Bachelor of Home Economics from the University of Manitoba. During her university years, she was introduced to Jack George, the love of her life and the “light of his life.” They were married on August 4th, 1950 at Riverview United Church and shortly after moved to Flin Flon where Madge agreed to live for one year so Jack could begin his career in education. One year turned into sixteen and it is there where their five children were born.
It was during the Flin Flon years that Madge and Jack formed numerous life long friendships, which followed them back to Winnipeg. These enviable and remarkable friendships were the foundation of their bridge games, curling, theatre and travels. After raising her five children, she continued to nurture children in the community through Vincent Massey Collegiate’s Home Economics department.
During retirement years, Madge and Jack travelled to many European countries and Malawi, Africa. These adventures frequently included the companionship of Madge’s best friend and sister-in-law Neva Nicholls and her husband Glenn. In addition, the two families shared countless celebrations together. The tradition of these bonds remain an integral influence on their families today.
Madge is survived by her children John (Mair), Donald (Catherine), Nancy, Douglas (Michael), Elizabeth (Steven) and Paul Ariano. She dearly loved her grandchildren Stephanie, Riley, Sophie, Joshua, Emily, Liam, Joellen (Matt), Bryn (Jillian), Jonathan (Cassandra) and her great grand children, Zoe, Trudy James and Hazel.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Vista Park Lodge for their compassion and dedication to Mom, as well as the wonderful staff and residents of Riverwood Square, where Mom and Dad spent six happy years.
We will all miss Mom’s quiet yet clever humour and her ever-loving heart. And so here ends one of life’s best, purest love stories ever.
In accordance with Madge’s wishes, a private family service has taken place.
Donations in Madge’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
