Following a battle with cancer, our loving husband and dear father, James Roberts, passed away with his family by his side at Riverview Health Care Centre.
James was 78 years old at the time of his passing. He will be sadly and lovingly remembered by his wife Roberta Gottschalk, his two sons Stephen Roberts and Sean Roberts and stepson Mark Shepit as well as his step-daughters Pearl Gottschalk, and Jasper Joy Gottschalk-Clarke. His nearest surviving family members in Ireland include his Cousin Terry and Derek Plunkett and niece Wendy and nephew Jamie Plunkett. He also leaves behind his beloved Yorkie, Tayko.
James was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy and James Stephen Roberts and his sister Angela Ryan, all from Ireland.
James was born in Dublin in 1945, and decided at a young age to come to Canada. He left his home in Ireland to work briefly in the mines in Snow Lake in 1967 and complete a university education to become a teacher. During this time, he also pursued a love of flying and received a commercial pilot's licence. Soon thereafter he entered university, married his first wife Sarah, whom had come over from Ireland to join him, had his two sons, and worked for over 30 years for schools in the Louis Riel School Division. He had a happy and fulfilling career, even teaching overseas both in Egypt and China after his retirement in 2008. He had a wonderful retirement reception from his colleagues at his final school, Niakwa Place.
He married his second wife Roberta in 2009, as he continued to teach and travel for a few years together with his wife.
During his retirement, James enjoyed some travel, a few cruises which he loved, some time in Penticton, British Columbia and a few road trips throughout Canada. And of course, he loved taking care of his dog and going for long walks together. He also worked together with his wife as they taught International students at Elim Chapel in Winnipeg for about eight years. He enjoyed getting to know newcomers to Canada and was very helpful in welcoming them into their new lives.
James was an honourable, kind, and good man who lived with integrity. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
The Funeral Service will be held at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home at 1291 McGillivray Boulevard on Monday, June 10, 2024 at 10:00 am. Livestream of service is available by clicking the Join Livestream button below.
The family appreciates the staff at Riverview during his last days especially his main nurse Maureen and Dr. Riel.
James and his wife were always concerned about child poverty in the world and adopted a few children over the years through World Vision. If desired, a contribution may be made to World Vision or UNICEF in his name.
