James Andrew Wood was born to Sydney and Dora Wood in Winnipeg on April 22, 1928. Winnipeg was his home all his life. He passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on February 25, 2014 after a brief illness.
Jim graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute. In 1951 he married Norah Ann Murphy and they raised three sons in Winnipeg. Over the years he worked in sales at American Optical and then as Sales Manager at Building Products and Concrete Supply until his retirement. Norah and he also spent several years volunteering helping newcomers to Canada learn English with the Winnipeg School Division. The Navy League of Canada was an important part of his life for over 70 years. He joined Sea Cadets as a 14 year old. As a young man, Jim served as a Sea Cadet Officer and became a Navy League Cadet Officer. Jim rose to the rank of Corps Commander for Winnipeg’s J.R.K. Millen Navy League Cadet Corps. At that time there were over 300 cadets attending. Jim was proud of his life membership in the Navy League of Canada and the Queen’s Jubilee Medal received in recognition for his work with young people.
Jim had fond memories of time with his parents and siblings at the family cottage at Loni Beach and later with Norah and the boys at their second home at Holiday Mountain in LaRiviere. Wherever he was you could be sure he would be in the company of one of the many dogs that were his buddies over the years.
Jim was predeceased by his youngest son Neil in 1999, as well as his three sisters Marjorie Dean, Kathleen Toole and Louise Lewis. He is survived by his wife Norah, sons Bruce (Laurie) and Ian (Twyla), his daughter-in-law Laura (Mark) McQuaid and his grandchildren, Brian Wood (Theresa), Lindsay Smith (Rob), Gary Wood (Lisa), Megan Wood , Cameron Wood (Amy) and Alessandra Wood as well as his four great-grandchildren Ben and Edie Wood and Jack and Edison Smith.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
