Harold Leonard Peter Hunter passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 8, 2024 at West Park Manor, where he had been a resident for four years.
He was predeceased by his first wife Joyce (Martin), his parents Peter and Katherina Unterscholts and sisters-in-law Valorie Hunter and Frances Martin. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Phyllis (Moore), his brother Dr. Gordon Hunter and children Kim, Peter and Sabrina.
Harold was born and raised in Winnipeg’s North End. He was proud to call himself “a North End boy.”
He attended Winnipeg schools and St. John’s High School. He showed musical ability at an early age, so was enrolled in piano accordion lessons. He was soon giving recitals with his teacher. In high school, Harold had a part in each year’s Gilbert and Sullivan productions.
At University Harold joined a band that played throughout rural Manitoba at weddings and celebrations in barns for two to three day stints. It helped with his university fees. In later years, he switched to the keyboard. He played beautifully.
Harold decided he wanted to join the Insurance industry. After graduation, he joined the Great West Life Insurance Company. In managerial positions, he served in Saskatoon, Regina, Windsor and Toronto, Ontario.
He worked with the Canadian Premier Life Company. He retired in 1987 from the Sun Life Insurance Company.
As Harold enjoyed running great distances, he looked for a place where he could run in the winter.
In Mesa, Arizona he bought a home in Monte Vista Village. There he enjoyed lawn bowling, pool and the many entertainments and activities offered to villagers. For thirty years he appreciated winter in the sun.
Watching sports was important to Harold. He followed the Blue Jays, the Jets and the Bombers. For several years with Phyllis, they flew to Toronto to see the Blue Jays play the Yankees.
According to Harold’s wishes there will be no formal funeral, however there will be a reception for friends to gather on June 21, 2024 from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home at 1291 McGillivray Blvd.
