Peacefully following a brief illness, it is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Gabriele Guzzi with his family by his side on February 3, 2022 at the age of 78. He will be lovingly remembered by: Spouse, Rosetta Guzzi, his children Felicia Blackburn (Justyn) Marianna Thwaites (Robert) Grandchildren Isabella Thwaites, Brooklyn Thwaites and Dominic Blackburn, his sisters Rosetta Guzzi (Tommaso) Maria Racciatti (Armando) and many nieces and nephews. Gabriele was predeceased by his parents Felicia Todaro and Giuseppe Guzzi, in-laws Marianna and Francesco Cantafio, Daniel Blackburn (grandson) and Gianluca Racciatti (nephew).
Gabriele was born in Italy in 1943. At the age of 18 he moved to Canada to start a new life. He met his wife Rosetta in 1980 and they were married in 1981. He had two beautiful children that were the light of his life, Felicia and Marianna. Gabriele worked as an electrician until the age of 60 when he happily retired after 40 years. He had four true loves in his life. His family, his garden, wine, and Italy. Gabriele’s heart was always in Italy. He loved Canada and the life that he created with his family in Winnipeg, but he never stopped yearning for his beloved home country. He was able to visit Italy many times after moving to Canada and also brought his children twice. He was truly happiest in Italy, his hometown, eating figs, drinking wine and chatting up a storm with his friends and relatives. Gabriele was a true family man in every sense of the word, he lived for his family. He was a protector; a provider and he loved his family fiercely. There was nothing he wouldn’t do to help you. He was kind to strangers and made friends easily as his wild and spirited sense of humor was hard to resist. Once his grandchildren were born, they became the center of his world, and their relationship was truly beautiful to witness. He loved to show them his garden, make sure they were always fed and shower them with love and affection. Gabriele’s vegetable garden brought him immense pride. He worked tirelessly in the warmer months to grow his tomatoes and beans; it was rare to see him inside before 9 PM on a summer evening. Gabriele loved wine and classical music. He made wine from grapes in his garage outside for more than 20 years and would always bring a bottle to share wherever he went. Gabriele had a wonderful life, full of love and happiness. He cared for so many, and they loved him. Gabriele struggled privately in his last 10 years, sheltering even his immediate family from the extent of his suffering. We will miss him forever.
In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place that no one could ever fill.
The family would like to thank Dr. Barry Campbell and Dr. Piotr Czaykowski, and so many other special nurses, doctors, and health care aids, who supported Gabriele.
