On November 3rd, Audrey Swan passed away peacefully at Golden West Centennial Lodge. She had persevered positively and without complaint through more than 30 years of dealing with MS. Audrey was the loving daughter of the late Grace and Milward Swan, and brother of the late Jack Swan. She is survived by her brother Gordon and Edith Swan, Jack’s widow Murlie Swan, several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She greatly enjoyed the many opportunities to be with Gordon and Edith’s son Doug, daughter Ellen, and their children. All children, all people gave Audrey much joy and love.
Audrey grew up in Norwood, where she lived for over 50 years. After attending United College Collegiate and Norwood Collegiate, she graduated from Manitoba Teacher’s College, and the University of Manitoba. In addition to her teaching degree, she achieved A.M.M and A.R.C.T. in Music Theory, and won the Mary L. Robertson Scholarship for Piano Performance.
During her 25 years of teaching in the St James-Assiniboia School Division, Audrey prepared many choirs for the Manitoba Music Festival, and introduced handbells to the elementary music program. Also, as a registered Music teacher, she privately taught countless students piano and theory, and was much in demand as an accompanist.
Always interested in Youth Work, Audrey for many years was very involved with Brereton CGIT Camp and the Winnipeg CGIT Board. She was President of the Junior Musical Club and the U of M Music Diploma Association. She was a valued member of the P.E.O and the University Women’s Club.
Audrey used her education and experience for beautiful service and spirit. She gave fully and freely of her encouraging and joyful disposition to her students, her Church, her family and to all whom she met. On Nov. 22 at 11:00 am (preludes at 10:45), in the Church to which she belonged all her life, Broadway-First Baptist, (Honeyman and Walnut) a worship will be held celebrating Audrey’s contribution to this world: beautiful and beneficial sounds, sensitivities, and smiles, and her now joining eternally the choruses and compositions of the heavenly spheres.
The family expresses sincere gratitude to the loving and caring staff at Audrey’s home for the last five years, Golden West Centennial Lodge. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to Golden West - Audrey Swan Memorial Fund (811 School Street, Winnipeg R2Y 0S8) or to the Swan Family Fund at her beloved Broadway-First Baptist Church ( 790 Honeyman Ave, Winnipeg R3G 0Y1) will be much appreciated.
