Samuel Sydney Archer

Samuel Sydney Archer of Windsor, Ontario passed peacefully surrounded by his family at 97 years of age on March 24, 2018. Visitation will be held at the Walter D. Kelly Life Celebration Centre (1969 Wyandotte St. E. 519-252-5711) on Tuesday from 7 pm to 9 p.m. with a memorial service under the auspices of the Windsor Veterans Memorial Services Committee at 7:30 pm. Friends and family are asked to gather at Riverside United Church (881 Glidden Ave.) on Wednesday, March 28 at 10 am until the funeral service at 11 am with Rev. Frank Staples officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverside United Church or to the charity of your choice. Sam was born on November 24, 1920 near Broadview, Saskatchewan. He is predeceased by his wife Elsie Elizabeth Archer in 2015 (married 67 years), and his daughter Catherine Elizabeth Archer in 1997. He is survived by daughters Judith May Archer-Dick (Charles) and Deanna Gail Fenwick (Graeme) and grandson, Jakob Emerson Fenwick. Sam is predeceased also by parents Charles and Mary Archer, brothers Hinckley (May), John (Alice) and Thomas (in infancy), and his sisters Kathleen Fafard (Romeo), Doreen Proctor (Frank) and Helen Huff (Blake). He is survived also by his sisters Lillian Ferch (Ralph deceased) and Faith Stanley (Bud) and brother Richard (Carole). Sam enlisted in the Air Force (RCAF) in 1941 and served as Wireless Air Gunner and eventually Flying Officer. Sam met Elsie Kurtz after the war and they were married in Winnipeg in 1948. Sam graduated from the University of Manitoba in Electrical Engineering and accepted a job with the Ford Motor Company in Windsor in 1950. They settled in Riverside in 1951 where he earned a Masters degree at the University of Windsor. He spent most of his career as the manager of the Ford Power House, and was with Ford of Canada for 35 years. Sam was an active member of Riverside United Church. He and Elsie were square dancers for many years, and enjoyed gardening and vacations with family. He will be greatly missed.
